The first part of 'Unfit for Love' is told from Dan's perspective.
"What you say we go back to my place and -"
Vennesa downed another glass of scotch. She endured the loser's breath because it made her feel normal. An ordinary girl at a dumpster bar. Nothing to see here...
After today, their lives will be upended. Dan was right. Countless times he said to stop, yet she pressed and pressed. For what? Money? Yeah... money...
It was never enough.
"Say you do drink a lot." The loser said.
"You noticed?" She smiled at herself more than anything.
"Yeah, I think -"
"Pssst." The barman shushed them with a finger to his lips. "Listen!" He said pointing at the small TV.
"The officer was off duty and the felons are still at large." The news reporter said.
"What's that?" Venessa asked.
"Apparently some lowlifes shot and killed an off-duty cop at a nearby bank." The barman said.
Venessa gulped down her heart. What? She shot a cop? She could feel her palms sweating. Well, if they weren't in the shitter by now, this sure did it. Good job Venessa. Good job...
"Hey, are you alright?" The loser asked with his dopy eyes.
She had to go to Dan. He was right. Godamnit why was he always right? They had to leave town as soon s possible.
"Where are you going?" The loser stood as she got her coat. "Hey! I'm talking to you!" He grabbed her arm, wrong move. Venessa decked him so hard that the fool got knocked out cold. She turned to the barman expecting him to say something, but the man just shrugged. The next moment, Venessa was out of the bar.
She got to the motel from the back entrance. And as she did, she could hear cars swerving to a stop in the front. Then, car doors slamming. She was a couple of feet from their door. She stepped back.
A moment later she heard several loud footsteps running up the stairs, then knocking their motel room door down. She was too late. They found them.
"On the ground, now!" One voice said.
"You punks think you can kill a cop and just get away with it? Eh?" Another said.
What should she do? Venessa felt her body being pulled in two. One towards Dan and death, the other towards the car and freedom. But what kind of freedom is that? Things that are free are not worth it.
"We didn't know!" Dan's voice.
"Tell that to his wife and children! Fucking scum!" The first voice said.
Venessa heard herself sigh. Whatever happened, she wasn't leaving Danny to the pigs. She broke into the apartment next door. Empty. They had surveyed this carefully when they booked their room. Each bathroom was connected to a ventilating system. Venessa found the vent, prying it open she heard a thud from next door. Not time to waste, she went inside.
Soon she was a top their bathroom. The pigs dragged Danny into the bathroom unconscious. Slamming him to the ground like a piece of meat.
"What do we do with his one?" One pig asked. "The shooter was a woman."
"We make 'em give 'er up." The other said.
"If he doesn't?"
"Trust me, Frank. I want the scumbag as dead as you do. But there are procedures. We'll lock his ass up. He'll eventually cave." The pig left the bathroom.
"Like hell, he will." He said leaning over Dan. "You're dying you sorry sack of shit? You hear me? What's that? Awww. Poppy's coming too?"
Venessa's head was scrambling. What to do, what to do what to -
"Listen to me, punk. We know you didn't shoot Jim. It was your psycho chick, wasn't it?"
"It was me..." She could barely hear Danny, but her heart sank anyway. Venessa barely held back her tears.
The cop was rambling some gibberish but Venessa was too focused on what to do next. The pig was gonna kill Danny! And she couldn't blame him - they crossed the line, killed a cop. It finally caught up to them. Venessa sighed. Should've left this game a long time ago.
Freedom it is then.
"Is that a fact?" Venessa cocked her pistol. "Tough luck for you then, punk." She prepared herself. "I'll make sure personally, that you never see the light of day again."
Venessa kicked the vent dropping down and blowing the pig's head off. He was holding a gun, he was gonna kill Dan!
"Ven!" Dan's eyes were wide open. "W-why?" Footsteps in the hallway. "You could've run away!"
The cops tried to open the door but the pig had locked it for some reason. "Open the door, Frank! Frank!"
"And do what?" Venessa cupped his cheek.
Dan was crying now. He shook his head. "Sooner or later -" he stared.
"- It all comes crashing down." she finished,
They were banging on the door now.
They kissed. They kissed more passionately than when they first met. Bodies covered in blood, they stayed that way, hugging each other on the dirty bathroom floor.
The door fell. "Holy shit!"
"Frank!"
"There she is! The psycho."
"I love you, Dan." She said, ignoring the pigs and focusing on her man.
Guns cocked -
"I love you, Ven." Dan smiled.
- and fired.
