๐Ÿ“ข RUN! NEMESIS IS BEHIND YOU! ๐Ÿ“ข

Or is he? ๐Ÿ˜…

Yes, I decided to write about this title after all. I admit I was very uncertain whether I'd have enough to say to justify a full column. But I do! This will be more of a comparison article, stacking up the original release with the new. I know that these games should be taken on their own merit. But why call it Resident Evil 3 then? Comparisons are bound.

And as a game, devoid of the original's existence - this is a good game. However, this is not a stand-alone experience. And so, the mob of angry Resident Evil 3 fans arrive with their pitchforks. Let's see why.

Becauseโ—๏ธ In this edition of Through the Lens ๐ŸŽž, we'll be taking a look at Capcom's reimagining of a classic, released in 2020: Resident Evil 3, โ—€๏ธ

(or Nemesis, which is ironic considering his role in this title)

Roll it! ๐Ÿ“ฝ

Take a listen to the soundtrack while reading. It should give you a taste of what the game is about. It's tone at the very least.

After the blockbuster slam dunk that was the remake of Resident Evil 2, the entire internet was waiting for this title with bated breath. Me included. What followed was a mess of a release and post-launch discussions. People hated this game. To no fault of its own. Merely because of the title it bore.

So let's go through and see what makes this beautiful mess so beautiful and such a mess. // was that a good sentence? I'm in two minds about it

๐Ÿ”ท NEMESIS ๐Ÿ”ถ

https://images.ecency.com/DQmaBy62eA6BBZ4KpRVJWN9xQTKAc53Z7AjiNgjvcYY9HrN/elegant_down.png

We have to start here, with the big baddie that left so many fans disappointed. Nemesis is one of the most iconic stalkers in video game history. And for better or worse he is nowhere near as menacing as his original counterpart. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Why? To put it simply - Mr. X from RE2R was a better Nemesis than Nemesis. It's like the two switched places. Mr. X in its original was a scripted boss that otherwise you could easily avoid, and Nemesis was this unrelenting stalker. In the remakes, it's the reverse. ๐Ÿ˜…

Apart from the opening Raccoon City section, where nemesis can jump out of nowhere. The rest of his interactions are scripted chase sequences and boss fights. Good boss fights, granted. But not what Nemesis represents.

And that's the problem here. By itself, if you are playing this game for the first time I doubt you will find a problem with this. But as a fan of the original, this is unacceptable. If you're going to reimagine the game, at least have the spirit of it intact. The essence. And while RE3 has that in some parts, Nemesis is a miss for sure.

๐Ÿ”ท OMISSIONS ๐Ÿ”ถ

https://images.ecency.com/DQmaBy62eA6BBZ4KpRVJWN9xQTKAc53Z7AjiNgjvcYY9HrN/elegant_down.png

For many people, the clocktower is one of the best sections in the franchise. I cannot imagine how many people were looking forward to slaying some spiders and solving some puzzles at the iconic level. Whelp - it's gone!

The omission of this level is the nail in the coffin for many people. I understand. It's like a slap in the face of the fanbase. But this will all come amazingly clear once we reveal who the developer of this remake is. Because it wasn't the devs of the Resident Evil 2 remake.

This dev team was actually a part of Platinum Games. And if you know Platinum, you'll understand every questionable design decision. The emphasis on combat and dodging, the linear nature of the title - when the original was a lot more open. It all falls into place.

And it's a shame. There's another section that's missing before you get to the labs. But that one is more forgivable in my eyes and in the eyes of many. Again, this is a great game, but it's not a true remake of Resident Evil 3.

๐Ÿ”ท THE GOOD ๐Ÿ”ถ

https://images.ecency.com/DQmaBy62eA6BBZ4KpRVJWN9xQTKAc53Z7AjiNgjvcYY9HrN/elegant_down.png

There is a lot of good in this title. The opening section of exploring Racoon City with Jill feels very Resident Evil. It's great. Shame that what we got afterward were just linear levels. It's like the devs knew what the fans would want but only relented for the opening act.

The story, characters, and presentation - S tier. I love what they did with everyone. Carlos most of all, as the voice actor really does an amazing job. The section where you see Marvin getting munched on is also amazing. That whole scenario is much better than what happened in the original IMHO.

The dodge mechanic from the original is back and feels amazing to use. Except for Carlos who has a charge move. Executing these moves as a parry is amazingly satisfying.

Again, the action is heart-pounding. The pace is break-neck. And again, it all makes sense when you consider that this was essentially developed by Platinum. The voice actors across the board and the overall polish in this game are incredible. ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ”ท LEGACY ๐Ÿ”ถ

https://images.ecency.com/DQmaBy62eA6BBZ4KpRVJWN9xQTKAc53Z7AjiNgjvcYY9HrN/elegant_down.png

The true definition of a mixed bag. I've met people that absolutely loved this game, but all of them were people that didn't play the original. And everyone that did hate RE3R with a burning passion.

Is it fair? Hell no. The devs put a lot of time and effort into making this game. If we had like a year more in development, this would most certainly be on the level of RE2R. But as is, it felt rushed.

A great game with a stained legacy. It's still early but I doubt this remake will be remembered fondly. If you have never played a Resident Evil game, then go for it. You won't regret it.
