...to the Tekken 8 preview series! - Reina. Mishima? Probably! I have to admit I wasn't expecting to do an article about a character that was freshly introduced. Their previous new entry, Victor, was so-so for me. While Azucena was cool enough to get her column a week later. But creating an article about a character that was announced yesterday? You know this $#!@ is good. 😎
Character Name: Reina First Appearance: Tekken 8 Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Mishima Style & Taido
I thought Azucena was the best new character we've gotten in years. But a couple of months later BN decided to drop a trailer that would dwarf any other. Yes, Reina is that cool. So cool in fact that it is tempting me to forgo Asuka and try out a Mishima for the first time. We will talk about the small details present since a lot of her character is shrouded in mystery. And also, we haven't had any hands-on with her, unlike the other previews.

🔷 GAMEPLAY TRAILER 🔶
As a Tekken fan, seeing this trailer made me utterly wet. As in I spilled the water I was drinking all over my shirt. This trailer is crackin'! The build-up of the EWG reveal was amazing. The stage, the music. Reina herself. Everything about it was done with such care that I have to say this is the best trailer yet. Yes, better than Kazuya, better than Azucena. Better than Jack. It was that good. Take a look for yourself. 🎥
There were rumblings that Heihachi had another daughter, and most of the community was expecting Reina because a pixel image was leaked of her. But even the leaks could not ruin her announcement. That should tell you plenty. But let me tell you more so you don't get it twisted as to exactly what draws people to Reina so suddenly.

🔷 APPEARANCE 🔶
Her design was done by the same gentleman who did the designs for Bayonetta. Again, need I say more? Harada spoke about how the direction they tried to go with her was one of duality. And you can definitely notice that by the two-tone jacket she is wearing. And I dunno what's with the Tekken Team and chokers, but they seem to love giving their characters kinks. 😜
Her voice is amazing. Everyone who watches the trailer points it out. I am not familiar with her voice actress but she did a bang-up job. Seriously, she gives off this demeanor that is arrogant but still earned. Which is rare. She fills in a niche in the roster that is absent. On top of being cool. A potent combo indeed.
Her Rage Art might be the best in the game? I mean, just look at that. All Rage Arts in my opinion should be as cinematic, and as character-revealing as this one. I know I keep saying this, but this is the last time - she's so cool. And yes, that is Heihachi's silhouette you see at the bottom of the Rage Art. His spirit flows through her and I love it.
I still think Heihachi is coming back. Maybe as the final DLC character or something. But Reina is not our Heihachi replacement, as we will talk about shortly. She has her own moves distinct from the Mishima style. And her character while electric (see what I did there?) is very Mishima-esque to me. Let's talk about that Mishima heritage.

🔷 NEW TECH 🔶
Here we are faced with the same predicament as the Azucena preview. *This section should be named just 'TECH' since everything in it is first seen in Tekken 8. Regardless, from the trailer, we can gauge that Reina has a lot of Heihachi's old kit. From the headput to the EWC, to his stance, to his counter. A lot of things are carried over and it's so freaking cool. Oops, I wasn't supposed to say that anymore. Sorry. 😅
She also displays moves from an ancient Japanese martial art - Taido, that we have yet to see in Tekken. Or for me personally, anywhere else. Always nice to see the spotlight on less known arts.
For now, we are just speculating. But I think with the ease of execution of the EWC, we will have a lot of people trying her out on release.

Hello everyone, sorry for the gush fest. I think the whole Tekken community is united in loving this character. Which is so rare. I just had to talk about her. 😁 We will return to our regularly scheduled program next time with something more familiar. Either Hworang or Jack. Probably Jack come to think of it.
