...to the Tekken 8 preview series! - Marshall Law. We've discussed Kazuya, now it's time to discuss one of the other pillars of Tekken. Renowned for being one of the original 7, Law has been present in every Tekken game. And yes, even though we got his dad in Tekken 3, that's still Law damn it!


Character Name: Marshall Law First Appearance: Tekken 1 Nationality: American Fighting Style: Jeet Kune Do


Marshall Law has seen some core adjustments to both his physique and fighting style. Both have garnered substantial criticism from the Tekken fans. Justified? In that, we'll have to discuss how valid are the thoughts of the elite when concerning the other 95% of the player base. We have to remember that most people who play this game are scrubs, so how much does the high-level perspective even help? We have a bunch to get to.

One of the more lackluster trailers, unfortunately. What led to one of the main Tekken characters getting such treatment? Same with all the others that were announced early. King, Paul, Law. All were shown early in lesser builds. We knew how they looked and what their Rage Arts were. There was little else to see, and the excitement was just not there. Still a good trailer, all the Tekken character introductions are good. I'm just giving you the fanbase perspective. Take a look for yourself. 🎥

I don't wanna get too deep into his style, both physical and combat. We have dedicated sections for that. I will say that they nailed his voice down. Even more so then in previous games, he just screams Bruce Lee. 😁 But there's not much more to say on the general front, let's get to the nitty gritty already.

🔷 APPEARANCE 🔶

So yeah, Law got JACKED. And I mean like steroids + creatine+ animal protein powder jacked. Like 2 gym sessions a day jacked. This man got yoked. 🏋️‍♀️ Now, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, if you can manage to do two gym sessions per day more power to you. But... Law is Bruce Lee, ya know? He's always been slim. The whole shtick with him is that he's smaller than you but will beat you with precision and skill.

But now, he can knock you out just by looking at you. 😂 Granted, he is still less buff than the other characters. Which is what saves it for me. I just think they were like, hey this guy is gonna have his shirt off, we need to give him muscles everywhere. But yeah, it was jarring when we first saw him. Now? I think most people are ok with the look. Specially when you consider the rest of the outfit.

So, the nunchucks. Pretty cool I must say. We will talk more about their addition in the next section, but from a purely aesthetical perspective, they work. I love his outfit, and his stance, his swagger. It all matches. The dragon on his pants is also apt seeing as how he's a dragon! *// that's a joke that few of you will get, but the ones that will, will get a chuckle, and I'm the chuckle man

Rage Art is more on the meh side for me. I'm kinda tired of finishers that consist of, hey eat this string into heavy attack. It was even worse before they added the slow-mo at the end. Felt really lackluster. Again, no Rage Arts are plain bad in this game. But I think they could've been more creative here. Maybe add some dragon effects or something. They add effects to the other characters, so not sure why they didn't give this one some extra oomf.

Now, let's get the more controversial stuff out of the way. Law has always been an easy-to-pick-up but hard-to-master type of character. Now, not so much. He is easy for beginners, and that skill separation that once existed is no longer present. You see, they greatly simplified the DSS input. To the point where the stance is stupidly easy to get into now.

You can see why this would make people frustrated. When you simplify legacy skills like this, it leaves the people who have spent YEARS mastering the skill feeling like idiots. To clarify, DSS is no longer bfb like it was. Requiring you to be precise in super-tight windows. Now? After certain attacks, you just hold forward and are immediately in the stance. So yeah, dumbing down to its core. Is it bad though?

They did this with Bryan as well, and I'm in two minds about it. Yes, most people couldn't even play the character's full kit because of his complexity. But the full kit was also meant for the real dedicated law players. Now everyone is a dedicated law player. I think... I honestly think it was needed. Tekken is complicated enough, honestly. This won't make Tekken dumber. But if someone came up to me and said they hate this change, and the game by extension, I wouldn't argue with them.

The nunchucks incorporation is sweet. The addition of weapons to the characters is cool to me. Makes them more dynamic. Also, his counter is much stronger now, able to counter punches as well as kicks. So he is a much stronger and easier character to play. Make of that what you will.
