π’ THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US! π’
The freezing apocalypse. π
First of all, we must admit how badass the title of this indie game is - frostpunk. It just rolls off the tongue, ain't it? And I know you didn't come here for a lesson in nomenclature, but golly gee you're getting one!
I love city builders, especially when there's no defending involved. You just chill and try to build the best settlement you can. Now, while I wouldn't classify frost punk as a chill game per see. π It's still a very unique city builder that I thought is worth shining a light on.
ThereforeβοΈ In this edition of Through the Lens π, we'll be taking a look at 11 Bit Studios' apocalyptic survival city builder from 2018: *Frostpunk Roll it! π½

πΆ UP TOP πΆ
Maybe take a listen to the soundtrack while reading? What does it contain, you ask? Just your usual background music, perfect for reading a blockchain blog such as this one. Grandious strings and cords meant to put you at ease while you are reading - or building a fortress meant o survive the freezing apocalypse.

I played Frostpunk when it first came out. At the time I was on an indie-game binge and I got so excited when this game out. Stronghold is one of my favorite games of all time. So naturally I have a soft spot for any and all society-builders or the more apt genre term - city builders. And this game fits the bill in so many ways.
Let's talk about said bill and how much it costs. // does that make sense? whatever we're rolling with it as we wont to do here on the channel, erm, blog!

πΆ PREMISE AND EXECUTION πΆ
It is the freezing apocalypse! βοΈ And naturally you are tasked with creating a bastion for the remnants of humanity still roaming this desolate wasteland.
There is an end goal to the game but most times you will just be surviving. Reason being: this game is hard. It is one of the most difficult city builders I have ever had the pleasure of playing. The difficulty is also apt because of the harsh conditions you are forced to survive in. It makes perfect sense while playing and encourages you to try harder and survive the harsh winds

For another thing, this game has one of the most unique upgrade systems you'll ever see in a city builder. Since everything is about heat (we'll talk bout that more later on) and survival, and it's literally the apocalypse, you can imagine what harsh ways of life exist in such a climate. Moreover, the game doesn't cut any corners when explaining the gruesomeness of a society that would survive in such a climate.
There are also choices that pop up doing a session that impacts your citizens in a variety of ways. We're talking about whether to chop people's hands off or spend precious resources building hospitals. These choices are nothing new to these types of games, but the way these are presented increases the immersion by a lot. π―
So I talked about gameplay session, what is the gameplay actually? Well, I'm glad you asked young one.

πΆ ICE AND FIRE πΆ
A SONG OF ICE AND FIR - No? okok.
You of course play from an isometric viewpoint. In the middle of your would-be society lies the generator. This is your lifeline, and if this dies, you die. So of course you have to take care of t by any means necessary. π¬
Every building you build is associated with heat in some way. And it alls terms from the generator. Now, you will eventually have to sacrifice the few for the many. π And that's just in the everyday, day-to-day, for an apocalyptic governor.

It gets even trickier if you play any of the other maps the game provides. You have the standard map which mainly concerns you reaching a certain point in time. But then you have maps with different conditions (such as taking care of three greenhouses scattered throughout the area). These are all way harder than the already hard base campaign. π And while I managed to beat the game on the standard mode, I got pretty far, but never actually managed to beat any of the alternatives.
By popular demand, as the life cycle of the game increased, the developers decided to add an endless mode. Which meant you could play the game forever. A welcome addition to the masochists out there. π

πΆ LEGACY πΆ
One of the best indie city builders ever made. Sure, some might say Cities: Skylines takes the cake on that one (and might have to do a piece of Skylines soon now that I think about it). But Frostpunk's uniqueness will sure make it stand out in the hearts and minds of the players that had the chance to play it.
Years later I still think fondly of the days I played this game, and I haven't come back to it since. When a game has a really good premise and strong execution, it truly creates magic. β¨
Frostpunk 2 is on the horizon and I hope that one is just as epic, and chilly, as the first.
If you are a lover of city-builders I implore you to give Frostpunk a try! You won't regret it! It is very cheap to buy and is an excellent time for any lovers of the genre! π―π―π―

Thank you for reading, you rock! (and maybe roll) πππ
Shout-out to the πPIZZAπ gang, π€ gang. π€
I'm glad I thought of Cities: Skylines while writing this. I guess that's where we're going next folks! π
Give this game a try! It's great fun and you won't regret it. Plus it's super cheap! Have fun and take care!
