The realization came quick - she was dead.
Maya swayed left, more from a wet spot on the floor than her impressive reflexes. She couldn't take her eyes off the blade as it announced her death. For a horrifying moment, she saw herself in the dagger's reflection.
Saw herself, and knew with utter certainty, she would do it all again.
Soul and spirit be damned - she welcomed her torment with open arms.
But the Gods were rarely just.
Pain, sharp and twisted ran through her right side. Boot. Maya slid a thin dagger and slammed it in the guard's neck. As he toppled over her, his blood started mixing with her own. Disgusting swine! She pushed with her left hand, gritting her teeth until the brute lay face down beside her. She could feel his filth splattered on her face and torso. Staining her very being. Maya was so aghast she almost forget the dagger planted in her shoulder. Almost.
Once on her feet,. Agghhh! She threw the weapon to the side. As useful as it might be, it was still coated in a traitorous scent. Her arm lay lame and useless , continuously drip, drip, dripping in the expanding pool around them.
This pig came out of nowhere, they were waiting for me... She took stock of the room. As dirty as any sty. She had seen and smelled a thousand such. I was warned my hubris might halt my mission. I did not think it would come at the hands of... Maya sniffed. How could an animal like him get the drop on her? Her! And those thoughts at her supposed end... She spat the corpse, a stab of pain coursed through her body as she kicked it. And again. Once the pain was too much she spat in his face.
"I'll be back for your master. You hear me?" He didn't. "Don't think you've stopped me..."
In her mind, Maya felt the edge of the Fog, if she passed the threshold she would collapse. She knew it. I have to get out of here. She was still on the periphery, the Fog boiling inside her mind and skin. Fading.
Escape. She had to escape.
Window! Maya ran, jumped, feet first, smashing through the ornamented window until it was just her, and the sky, and the stars. And the moon, full and beautiful. The ground forced her flight short and she splashed in a large water barrel, shocking her senses. One of their drinking canisters. She climbed out, leaving it crimson.
Maya, soaked and bloody, took one last look at the angry heads appearing in the window. "I'll be back pigs! Wait for me! Remember me! Either in this life or in your nightmares - I'll return!" The dogs she evaded on entry were now barking. Louder. Maya did the only sensible thing a Blood Oath Assassin would.
She ran. Shouts and bells rang behind her, the effects of the Fog dwindling in taunt. She tripped and got back up. Ran. Her useless arm angered her so, she almost ripped the thing off whole. The longer she ran, the more it annoyed her. As she fled, her thoughts ran red.
Her only concern was finishing what she started.

This is a short story with a 3k word count, roughly. So instead of doing 1/2 big posts, I decided to split it up in these small bite-sized chunks. Might've been the wrong idea but we'll seeee. 😁
Next part won't be much longer and it will release tomorrow. Hope everyone joins me on this bloody journey❗️
