It was a cool summer morning when Teddy lost his Spider-Man.
Teddy's mom was dragging the hapless boy through his father's courtyard. The poor lad had barely enough time to pack his things. As it happened, he carried his favorite toy in his hand, afraid that if he packed it - it would be lost forever.
Such is the folly of youth. Teddy dropped his toy as he was entering a cab. Until then, Teddy was nonchalant about the whole affair. His parents weren't really mad at each other... were they? Like, were they really? The moment that cab left his toy on the pavement, the magnitude of what had happened hit him like a school bus. His life, as he knew it, was over.
This toy was not only life-changing but well-made. As expensive as toys for rich boys get. Teddy didn't think of these things, however, he didn't understand why he wanted his toy. He only understood the void it left behind.
Teddy would grow up petty and angry at the world. He saw his father on weekends, then every other week, then every month, then... Let's just say by the time he was eighteen both parents were out of his life, one way or another.
He had his colleague fund still, his parents weren't animals. His studies went well, his social life was as expected. But he was always distant, always uninterested.
Until he met Derick. Derick was unlike anyone in the world. He was cool, yet vulnerable; he was good at math but also hated studying; he was a hard worker, yet enjoyed two bears each morning.
Derick was special, and Teddy was drawn to him like a bee to a flower. The more he learned about Derick the more enamored he became. Apparently, he grew up poor, his mom had to beg each day in front of pompous rich people's homes just so they could survive - his father had left them a long time ago.
Once he could, Derick worked. And once his work was over, his other work began. In time, his mom stopped begging, and they both started eating actual meals. And once the food was secure, Derick used his money to sign up for courses and private classes. He scratched, he clawed, and soon he was at the same university as Teddy. And he made it with only his wits and the clothes on his back. Remarkable.
One night, while they were studying for a particularly hard arithmetic exam, Derick said the funniest thing. He would usually wax poetic about the finer things in life, and that night's topic was motivation - specifically his own.
Derick stressed he found motivation in the littlest things. When you were down, anything and everything could lift your spirits. Finding beauty in all things was the greatest secret to finding happiness.
He learned this one afternoon when his mom brought home a toy Spider-Man.
