Jayce made sure his gun was clean and ready.
All set. He tapped the apartment door twice and waited. And waited.
The prick was under his protection for two years, no incidents, no setbacks. Jayce recalled all the times Nelson came to him, squealing for help. Now he thinks he's some big shot. Hasn't returned Jayce's calls in a month. It was time to pay him a visit.
Jayce knocked again, harder. Still nothing.
His thermal scan confirmed two bodies alive and well. So the prick is hiding. They were on the thirty fourth floor so there was no escape. Jayce got out his breach kit and within minutes the door was open.
"Nelson! Wake up you old goober! It's your friend! Jayce!"
Jayce heard muffled curses and panicked shuffles. He crossed the living room and stood beside the door where the noise came from. The sporadic movement stopped, and the silence began to take a life of its own. Jayce waited for the mouse to squeal...
"Jayce!" Nelson yelled from inside the bedroom. "How are ya?"
"Can't complain. You got my credits?"
"Jayce, buddy, you know I'm good for them. I've had a little trouble recently, that's all."
"Used to be when you had trouble you'd come to me. What happened?"
"Jayce! Come on! You know me!"
"Why do you think I'm here, Nelson?" Jayce slammed his breaching kit on the door, Nelson was sure to hear it. "I'll repeat, where're my credits?"
No response. That punk thinks he can get the drop on me? The kit got to work and Jayce scanned the room to see Nelson crouching behind his toppled bed. The other person was in the opposite side of the room, probably in a closet. Good. There was no need for additional casualties.
Click.
The door was breached. Jayce threw a decipher bomb that immediately got negated. Clever runt. Gunfire, but Jayce's systems warned him. He ducked, dodged, vaulted inside the room. Grabbed a hand lamp and threw it behind the bed. He earned precious seconds of confusion - it was enough. With his thermal view he shot Nelson in the shoulder. Then again in the knee - the bastard got a sidearm augment in that knee.
"Stop! Stop it you maniac, don't shoot!"
"Get up, Nelson. Nice and slow."
"I can't! You shot my leg!"
"Nice and slow, Nelson!"
He did. wobbling to his feet, hands in the air. The prick tried putting on a grin, but it was tarnished by all the wincing he did. "Jaycey, pal! You look great!"
"Aha. Where're my credits, Nelson?" Jayce had him in his sights, fully ready to blow his scammer brains out.
"I don't got it yet, Jacey. I told you." Nelson fidgeted. "Is this really necessary man? I've been a client of yours for years. Never missed a month. One month off and you do this?"
Jayce cocked his weapon. "You knew the conditions of our deal. Did I not warn you what would happen? Mm? Where'd you use my credits?"
Nelson was babbling some gibberish but Jayce was too focused on his incoming scan. The prick really didn't have any money. He'd lied. Spent it all on... fluids?
"You out here getting high... with my credits?" Jayce's voice dripped venom.
Nelson stopped his rambling, he knew what was next. He knew! Jayce had told him what would happen. And the fool couldn't help himself. It was almost enough to make Jayce sigh if he wasn't so furious.
"Jayce, I - I - I've been through a lot man! Cut me some slack!"
"With my credits?" This time it was a whisper.
"Jayce. Brother mine. I -"
"Thanks for your monthly support, Nelson."
His gun fired, and Nelson was no more.
